FISJ Eco-school Programme
A Step Towards a Truly Eco-School
by Gabriel Quek, Grade 9
Our environment is precious to us. It provides us basic necessities such as fresh air, clean water, fresh foods, and more. But recently, there has been rapid occurrence of natural disasters happening around the world which is damaging our environment, such as: Natural forest fires, flash floods, tsunamis, drought, etc. all effecting our eco-system.
Because of this, our eco leader Mr Gene held a 3 week long competition for both the Primary Year Program and Middle Year Program to compete in so that they were made aware of the current situation: poster drawing and slogan making competition. The event was created to make the students express their creativity while conveying messages through their posters and slogans telling us that our environment is important and it is our duty to keep it clean. The event was well received as many students submitted their posters and slogans to engage in this event and to compete with each other. Of course, there were some difficulties getting student’s participating in the event as they were busy completing their assignments. Nonetheless, posters were received once the students had completed their respective task.
All in all, the event was a massive success and they were able to achieve their objectives. The winners were also given their prizes shortly after.

Eco School Campaign
by Kretika Roshani Paramesvaran, Grade 9
Over the course of this month, FISJ has been running an eco-school campaign to raise environmental awareness in both faculty and students. This campaign was organised by the school’s Eco Warriors club led by Mr Genefer. This team of exemplary students worked tirelessly towards making this school an eco-friendly one. The latest activity the club had organised was a poster and slogan making contest held for both students of the PYP and MYP. As an effort to get students involved in this eco campaign, students were encouraged to submit their entries for both the slogan and poster contests. Both the PYP and MYP students showed valiant effort in their work which was extremely appreciated by the Eco Warriors.
Three winners for each category were chosen. Goh Hui Li reigned first place for her poster, followed by Joslyn Lee Qian Hui and last but most definitely not least, Daniel Yap Jun Xian. Eer Jun Wei took first place for the slogan creating contest, followed by runner up Wong Kie Sun and second runner up Kretika Roshani Paramesvaran for the MYP .The upper MYP students thoroughly enjoyed this event and were grateful to be given the opportunity to participate in an activity that contributed to an important cause.
The PYP kids did not disappoint as well. They gave it their all and produced quality work. The poster contest was won by Jenif Leong, Shermaine Kiew and little Adrian Toh Tzi Jian while Narmitha Gunalan took first place for the slogan contest followed by Yiwon Tang and Elaine Tan.
All in all, the Eco School Campaign as a whole, was an eye-opener. It made students realize that they too can play a part in making the world a better, greener place. Kudos to the Eco Warriors for making this campaign a success.
