A K-Pop group from Grade 4; composed by Rui Qi, Elicia, Arina and Ji Young, bagged the Third Place while the Indian Classical Dancer, Narmitha of Grade 6, and the Magician from Grade 4, Teruhiko, bagged the Second Place and First Place, respectively. Parents and students listened attentively to the individual personal project reports of the students. They also inquired about how these Grade 11 students devoted their time and effort to finish their project and how they come up with a strategy to successfully conclude their works. The Grade 11 students lectured with pride and honor as this personal project would be their ticket to finish their last year in this institution. Last 17th of February 2017, Fairview International School Johor celebrated its first ever collaboration of big events. It is for the first time that the school simultaneously held its Language Appreciation Week, International Food Fair, Personal Project Exhibition and Fairview´s Got Talent Grand Finals. One of the highlights of the Language Appreciation Week was the Language Passport, wherein parents became teachers in teaching Tamil, Filipino, Korean, Japanese and Arabic to guests, parents and students of Fairview. Students in the Lower PYP competed in the Storytelling contest while students in the Upper PYP participated in the Writing Contest. On the other hand, MYP students bested in the Persuasive Writing Contest. To tap the event with the goals of IB, the event included the Best International Mindedness Classroom as one of the contests of the event. Unit 2 was all about homes. It was a very interesting unit to inquire on. During this unit, students of the Reception class were given a chance to explore different cultures we have in our classroom. In line with that, we had our enthusiastic parents who came in as our guest speaker to share about their own culture and values. Students were introduced to the celebration, traditional food, attire and also their own family traditions. Moreover, they were also given a chance to taste variety of food from different country. This unit really gave an opportunity to the young learners to develop their understanding on the difference between a house and a home. For this unit, the grade 1 students inquired into “Celebrations and traditions are expressions of shared beliefs and values”. The students were encouraged to be reflective with photos, pictures, artifacts of different celebrations and traditions. They then developed skills as a communicator verbally relating the similarities and differences that they observed when we were sharing all different types of celebrations and their tradition. During the summative assessment, students wused recycled materials to create their own celebration artifacts that signify the symbol of the festival. It was such an amazed to see each of them really had their thinking cap on to create many types of celebration artifacts.
Thinking and talking about family members and the relationships that we get from them gives an excitement and full of joy having them in our life. Grade 1 students had an enjoyable day talking and discussing about their family and what they do. Students were very involved in making the family tree and the puppet sticks. This activity resembled their family members. These 5 whole weeks made them understand the bonding and the closeness that they had has increased as compared to before the activity was carried out.
