This week we reflected on what we want to be when we grow up. We had an opportunity to share why we chose such a profession and we can do now to achieve those dreams. We also looked closely on a special story, special because it has no text, only images. It was interesting to know what the story is about just by looking at the pictures. We also learnt about brochures and how to make them. We had to learn to use MS Paint in order for us to create a brochure. Sometime this week, we also had the chance to visit the Johor Art Gallery. It was an interesting week!

The students in Grade 6 enjoyed choreographing their dance steps for the musical 'Hairspray'. They were able to apply some of the leadership qualities which they have been learning for the last 3 weeks while working on the musical. They learned to cooperate with one another well and listening to each other's ideas. The students had a meaningful trip to Malacca inquiring deeper about our national leaders from the past and present. They were awed when they entered the Governor's Museum, experienced some parts of a life of a governor. They proceeded to the Democratic Museum to understand further how Malaysia adopted this system while having a monarch till today. They immersed themselves with the flavour of Malacca by gracing their presence at the Red House, Dutch Square, St Paul's Church and A Formosa. They had a sumptous Peranakan lunch before continuing with the Arts Museum. It was a fruitful trip where they walked down many historical lanes that day.
We were very excited for Week 4 as we were going for an excursion to JARO (Johore Area Rehabilitation Organisation) to see disabled and handicapped people at work. We were very grateful to the staff at JARO who obliged us with our visits and showed us around their centre. Our Grade 1 students were excited to be on their very first field trip. We were aquainted with Mr Ong and Madam Lee who showed us how their staff, most who are either blind, deaf, handicapped or mentally retarded were hard at work making bags, jewellery, dolls, baskets, chairs and even book binding. We were humbled with what we saw and reflected back on ourselves of how we must appreciate everything that we have. We ended our tour with some purchases and kind donations from parents to the organisation. It was a rewarding experience as the students of Grade 1G learned about appreciation, empathy and values of hard work. For English, students learned letter Ii. As letter i stands for ink, students used ink to trace letter Ii. We even cut out a big letter " l " and students were brought to the MPH to spot letter i. For Maths, we had a lesson on comparing long and short. We went to the school field and students were asked to collect and compare anything long and short. After collecting the objects, students came back to their class and they were asked to paste both their object on a piece of paper and label it with short and long. As an integration with UOI, students were briefed on the rules at the field by Mr. Suresh. In addition, we had a school project. Students designed their own National Day t shirt.
Many more engagements and arts and craft activities were done by our dear Creche students. They used buttons, paper plates and ice cream sticks to create different faces for UoI and when learning about the letter C, students made a crown. Students in Grade 2G class inquired into colourful and black and white images. We talked about the difference and chose one that we prefer. We also learnt how to add and subtract and how to use plural and singular nouns.
Students in my class were asked to bring pictures showing things that they can do and depicting their interests and abilities. We pasted them onto the board and they talked and shared among themselves. A short video clip was introduced to the students showing some physically disabled people and what they can do. This made them realise that even though they may not be as normal as themselves, they are special in their own way. Several other engagements were done in class as we inquired about number bonds in Maths and dissected a story in English.
We were very privileged to have one of our student's mum, Madam Rasimar to conduct a session; it was engaging as she is a trainer by profession. She was able to bring out the essence of the central idea very effectively, highlighting the ways of being a good leader by the decisions and choices a leader has to constantly make. The activities were very age-appropriate and students were able to learn well from them. The students were very participative and cooperative most of the time. She was able to apply the qualities which they discussed in the session as they carried out the activities. The students in Grade 6 had a fun time while reviewing 'verbs' this wek; getting all of them sorted out in tenses. There were some bloopers and new revelations but all in all, they cleared their doubts and on the way to applying them more in future.
This week for maths, students were exposed to the new topic in SOW, which is "percentage". Students were given shopping catalogues and instructed to cut out all the items from it. they were also reqired to come up with their own shopping mall name and make a promotional catalogue to promote the items they have cut out. Then they were required to give discount for each items and calculate the differecnces between the actual price and discounted price. Week 3 started off with one question "What can I do?". Students of Grade 1G were asked to think about their interests and abilities over the weekend and did a mindmap activity of what they can do. They were excited to list down the things which they are capable of and to share with their friends their interests and abilities by showing the artefacts brought from home. Some were happy and proud to share what they have brought and others were slightly shy to talk in front of a crowd but managed with the encouragement of their friends' questions. For English, students worked on words for each alphabet and took time to search for new words in the library. They also have daily readings of Fitzroy books and have shown improvement in their reading abilities. For Maths, students of 1G have started to explore addition through number bonds. They have also created their own number stories for their friends to solve. It certainly have been a busy week of Sorting out. The third week of school was amazing for the Reception students. We had a project for our unit of inquiry. Students were asked to build their school using recycled material with their own imagination. We inquired into shapes and students were asked to spot the shapes that they can see around the school. |
